Darcy Bomford is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of True Leaf, a plant-focused wellness brand for people and their pets, headquartered in Vernon, British Columbia.
Darcy is a pet food industry veteran who started out as a veterinary assistant and then turned young entrepreneur when he recognized a gap in the market for nutrient-rich treats for pets. At the age of 16, he started marketing his own all-natural supplements for dogs and selling them out of his van, eventually growing the business into a public company with 60 employees.
In 2012 Darcy exited the business, and with 25 years of experience in branding, manufacturing, sales, distribution, quality assurance and global regulations now under his belt, subsequently founded True Leaf Pet – a company that pioneered hemp-seed based pet supplements.
True Hemp™ is the first hemp-seed based pet product line to be marketed globally and the company’s dog chews, dental sticks, and supplement oils are now sold in more than 1,800 stores across North America, Europe, and New Zealand. The company’s product line is made up of formulations that provide calming support, promote hip and joint health, and help boost immune and heart function for dogs.
Earlier this month at the Interzoo international pet industry show in Germany, the company introduced an innovative hemp-seed based cat treat for sale in the European market. The innovative treats have a crunchy outer shell and a soft inner core made with hemp – a first to the industry world-wide.
True Leaf’s other division, True Leaf Medicine, is currently waiting for a licence to produce and sell cannabis from Health Canada. In the interim, the company is building the True Leaf Campus cannabis cultivation facility in the North Okanagan region of British Columbia – the heart of “BC Bud” country – where it will research and develop a line of medicinal cannabis products for patients looking for alternatives to pharmaceuticals once it receives the licence.
